3 tips to staying on top of pigmentation
The warmer season is upon us which means longer days outside, more sunshine and more, uh, pigmentation? No thanks! Pigmentation is another skin concern which tends to thrive in the warmer weather as sun exposure is quite a large contributor.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, let us take a look at what exactly pigmentation is and its causes. Pigmentation usually involves brown patches, splotches or marks on the skin, and can be caused by many factors including hormone imbalances, inflammation or excessive sun exposure. It comes about when the body produces excessive melanin (the pigment that gives our skin its colour) and unevenly disperses it on the surface of the skin.
Now that we have that out of the way, here are our top three tips so you can stay on top of your pigmentation.
- Understand your type of pigmentation first. Before attempting to treat your pigmentation, make sure you know what type you have. People with different skin tones will show different pigmentation types. For instance, those with an olive complexion are more likely to develop post-inflammatory pigment, those with fair skin will be more susceptible to sun-induced pigmentation, and women impacted by hormone imbalances are more prone to suffer from melasma or chloasma, otherwise known as hormone-induced pigmentation.
Now, we know this sounds like a lot to understand, and that is because it is! Rather than trying to know the ins and outs of pigmentation yourself, we recommend leaving it to the experts and consulting with a Skin Doctor or Skin Therapist. - Look into prevention and treatment products. Without a doubt, the easiest way to prevent most forms of pigmentation, particularly sun-induced pigmentation as we mentioned earlier, is to apply a high-level, broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. With many non-greasy and oil free sunscreens now available, it is easier than ever to incorporate a sunscreen into your daily routine.Another product worth investing in is vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights fine lines by stimulating collagen, brightens your complexion by blocking excess pigment creation, and protects your skin from damaging free radicals.
You did not think we would leave you to find these products on your own, did you? Take a look at the skincare available in our shop here, and again if you are overwhelmed, see our Skin Therapists for a consultation at no charge! - Explore treatment therapies. Along with skincare products, depigmentation therapies can help achieve great results for treating pigmentation and other skin concerns including sun spots, freckles, skin discolouration and more. One of the most effective therapies is the advanced peel with Cosmelan which is specifically designed to remove pigmentation from your skin, restore smoothness and leave you with a radiant finish. It almost sounds too good to be true, right?
Cosmelan works its magic by drawing unwanted pigment to the surface of the skin and shedding it away; leaving you with a brighter complexion. To help achieve the best results from the treatment, there is a multi-step approach which includes at-home skin preparations prior to the peel.
Cosmelan depigmentation therapy is available at our clinics in New Town (Hobart, TAS), Coorparoo (Brisbane, QLD), Darling Downs (Toowoomba, QLD), Skin Integrity (Terrigal, NSW), Gold Coast (Palm Beach, QLD), and Berwick (Melbourne, VIC).
