How to rehydrate your dry winter skin

Our skin goes through a lot during winter. Some of the most common challenges during the cooler months are dryness, dehydration, dullness and redness, and it can be frustrating to overhaul your skincare routine to accommodate these seasonal problems.

Luckily, a few small changes can help your skin to stay hydrated and appear vibrant and fresh, even during winter.

Why do we reassess our skincare during winter?

Winter causes all sorts of problems for our skin. The concerns we typically see at this time of year are caused by colder temperatures, stronger winds, dryer air, artificial indoor heating, and hot showers. These tend to draw the moisture out of the skin and deplete its moisture barrier, which in turn weakens the skin’s ability to protect itself.

How can we treat dry winter skin?

Moisturisers can help to relieve some of the symptoms of dry skin and prevent further damage to the moisture barrier.

However, simply slathering on some moisturiser won’t cut it. The skin’s moisture barrier is delicate and needs to be properly restored to truly treat the symptoms we see in the cooler months.

Gentle exfoliation and a hydration serum are great tools to include in your skincare regime during winter, especially if you are starting to see symptoms of dryness, redness, or a generally dull complexion.

What skincare products are right for me?

Everyone’s skin is different. Some people might not know where to start with choosing the right products for their skin. Others experience dry skin all year round and already include moisturisers and hydration serums in their day-to-day skincare routine - so what should they do differently to give their skin a boost during winter?

If you need help rejuvenating and hydrating your skin or beating that winter dullness, our Skin Therapists will welcome you for a free consultation to assess your skin and tailor your skincare regime to treat your specific concerns and skin type.

Other than changing my skincare, what else can I do?

Skin therapies such as LED light therapy are a great adjunct to topical skincare products for healing and rejuvenating dry, red or dull skin. LED light therapy has powerful rejuvenation effects as it stimulates dermal blood flow and enhances the skin’s ability to heal, leaving the skin smooth and bright. The therapy is also used to relieve inflammation and can have a positive effect on your overall mood and well-being, which is great for beating the winter blues!
