Enhance your natural features

Volume replacement come in a variety of materials and are used to subtly improve the appearance of the ageing face by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles as well as replacing some of the volume loss that occurs as we lose fat from various parts of our face as we age.

Volume replacement can be used in areas where muscle relaxants have effectively treated the “active” wrinkles but where resting wrinkles remain. These include the brow, crow’s feet around the eyes, creases around the mouth and nose, and lines around the forehead, lips and jaw.

We are one of the very few practices to use collagen stimulating fillers to not only restore volume loss but also improve skin quality and texture, resulting in a more natural look and avoiding the "puffy" look.

How does Volume replacement work?

If you have hollowness in your cheeks, under-eyes, chin or jaw, it could be a result of lost tissue and fat volume. Volume replacement treatments, which are made from naturally occurring substances found in the human body, help to replace that lost substance.

Volume replacement is strictly administered by medical professionals in our centres who achieve natural-looking results in restoring a more youthful appearance to your face and enhancing your natural features.

It is important that your skin is clear of rashes, infections and cold sores. If you are prone to cold sore outbreaks, it is advisable that you mention this to your doctor at the time of your initial consult and commence a course of anti-viral medication a week prior to your appointment and for a week after the treatment. If you are taking any medications or supplements that promote bruising (and are not medically necessary), stop them at least two weeks prior to your appointment. Do not stop any medications without consulting your GP first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the side effects of volume replacement?

It is not uncommon to have bruising at treatment sites for up to a week following volume replacement. This can be alleviated using ice packs and topical arnica in the post-treatment period. We advise all our patients to undergo 20 minutes of red-light treatment (available at our centre) immediately afterwards, which helps decrease the bruising and promotes collagen remodelling.

A temporary sensational swelling can last anywhere between 12 hours to three days post-volume replacement. Most people return to work and their normal routine the next morning after treatment. It is our practice to review our patients at two weeks post-treatment for further product placement if desired. A reversal agent can be used to alleviate swelling.

Hyaluronic acid can produce excellent results for a period of six months (for the more superficial treatments) and up to 12 months (for the deeper, more robust treatments) post-volume replacement.

What should I be aware of before receiving volume replacement?

It is important that your skin is clear of rashes, infections or cold sores prior to your volume replacement treatment. If you are prone to cold sore outbreaks, it is advisable that you mention this to the doctor at the time of your initial consult and commence a course of anti-viral medication a week prior to your appointment and for a week afterwards.

If you are taking any medications or supplements that promote bruising (and are not medically necessary), stop them at least two weeks prior to your appointment. Do not stop any medications without consulting your GP first.

What type of volume replacement is used?

Most volume replacement material is now sourced from naturally occurring substances found in the human body. They are classified as temporary, semi-permanent or permanent.

Our volume replacement products are from reputable companies based in Australia, FDA approved, used extensively in Europe and the USA, and incorporate either hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite.

The choice of volume replacement depends on the area to be treated, the depth of replacement required, the effect desired, and the characteristics individual to each patient’s face. We advise a step by step, minimalistic, gradual approach to achieve subtle and beautiful results over time.

As part of your initial skin consultation, your dermal clinician will take photos of your face and discuss all treatment options regarding volume replacement individualised to your facial shape, symmetry, skin type and age. We invite all patients to return for a review after two weeks in case there is a need for a top up, as we prefer to be conservative in the first treatment to achieve natural results.

Is volume replacement better than muscle relaxants?

Volume replacement and muscle relaxants are different procedures that treat different concerns. Volume replacement restores lost volume with a liquid substance under the skin, while muscle relaxants administer a neurotoxin to stabilise muscle movement and this smoothes out wrinkles. You should speak with your doctor or dermal clinician about which treatment is right for you.

Who will perform my volume replacement procedure?

Volume replacement is strictly delivered by our experienced team of dermal clinicians, including Aesthetic Doctors and degree-certified Aesthetic Nurses and Dermal Therapists. Our team hold certifications specifically focused in aesthetic medicine and are very experienced in delivering these treatments, with patient safety and expectations as our top priority. As your treatment is delivered in a medical facility, we can address any unlikely complications that may arise.

How long does volume replacement last?

Depending on the product used, volume replacement usually lasts between 6-12 months, extending up to 18 months with more robust products. Regular maintenance treatments can help prolong the results of your dermal fillers and lengthen the time required between treatments.
